The design of the Flower of Life is also modelled upon the flower drawings of the artist Sölvi Helgason, one of the most famous wonderers in the history of Iceland. Ever since the days of the first settlers, the short-tailed Icelandic sheep has provided food and clothing for the people of Iceland. This remarkably hardy animal has survived every natural disaster and climatic adversity Icelandic nature has thrown at it.The sheep grow wool for traditional handicraft and textile industry as well as providing excelente meat, which is a major ingrediente in Icelandic cuisine. A number of place names in Iceland stem from sheep and sheep farming and the sheep are truly an integral part of the appearance and culture of the Icelandic countryside.

In the spring of 2010, Lagður joined the elite group of Icelandic rams when he was chosen as a breeing ram for the nationwide AI breeding services. As a result of this, sheep farming in Iceland will reap the benefits of his excellent genetic traits for years to come. “

The Atlantic Puffin (Fratercula arctica) is the most common bird that nests in Iceland. I tis found on islands and grassy cliffs along the coast. The Puffin, which is a migratory bird, is commonly nicknamed the pastor in Iceland due to its distinguished appearance.Puffin couples nest in burrows where both parents keep a home for their single chick, which is called kofa or pysja in Icelandic. The couple separates during winter but reunite in Spring, returning to their busy family life. I tis hard to say if the separation is the key to the Atlantic puffins’ successful relationship, but studies show that puffins mate for life.
I tis hard work feeding sandeels, caplin and various invertebrates to the hungry chick. At the end of the day the puffin therefore enjoys a well-deserved break with his neighbours, as seen here. The chick leaves the nest in August and flies toweards the sea. However, many lose their bearings. In the Westman Islands, South of the mainland, i tis customary for children to collect the confused chicks and guide them to the sea. “

kr. 3.290,00 – kr. 9.350,00Krumkaka – Krumkake
The “Krumkaka” is a decorated festivity bread, fried in specially designed krumkaka-irons. The decorations on the irons can be of different patterns that are influenced by national traditions or religion. In the old days, the krumakaka-irons were expensive and not everybody could afford one. Those who didn’t could use the services of so-called “baking women” who travelled from one farm to another fried the krumkakas using their own irons. Despite newer cooking traditions in Norwegian homes, the krumkaka has endured and for many a necessity for the Christmas table.

Reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) are newcomers to Iceland. They were introduced in the 18th century as na attempt to expand Icelandic farming. However, Icelanders never mastered reindeer herding and kept to their traditional sheep farming.Reindeer have a circumpolar distribution and have been domesticated for over 2.000 years. This hardy animal has evolved unique adaptations to survive in the cold Arctic, including a thick coat and large hooves.
The Icelandic reindeer population consists of around 4.000 animals that are confined to the East and Southeast of Iceland. The females calve in late May and during summer they form large herds roaming the highlands. In early autumn the males join the herds for the breeding season. In winter, the herds break u pinto smaller groups, which are often seen in the lowlands, seeking regure from the hardship of winter frosts.
Throughout the years the people of East Iceland have hunted reindeer for meat and skin, and used its horns for tool making and handicraft. Today the reindeer plays and importante role in the identify of East Iceland and the locals proudly welcome guests to meet these highland travellers. ”

Each rider often travels with several horses, resulting in a lively herdo f loose horses accompanying the travellers.
One of Iceland’s most spectacular riding paths lies in þingeyrasandur in Northwest Iceland, where the pictured herd runs. The sandy reef separates a freshwater lagoon from the Atlantic Ocean.
