Blóm lífsins (The flower of life) Wool Blanket – HUGRÚN

The Flower of Life is a recurring pattern in Nordic visual art. The pattern can be traced to Asia, where the term originated. It may be compared to the tree Yggdrasill, the source of life. The design of the Flower of Life is also modelled upon the flower drawings of the artist Sölvi Helgason, one of the most famous wonderers in the history of Iceland. Back in the day when Icelandic women traveled on horseback in a side saddle, they used woolen blankets to protect themselves from the elements. This blankets were beautifully decorated with colorful patterns. The blanket brings the owner warmth and cover from the winds of the world.

    “ Lagður the Ram
Ever since the days of the first settlers, the short-tailed Icelandic sheep has provided food and clothing for the people of Iceland. This remarkably hardy animal has survived every natural disaster and climatic adversity Icelandic nature has thrown at it.

The sheep grow wool for traditional handicraft and textile industry as well as providing excelente meat, which is a major ingrediente in Icelandic cuisine. Icelandic sheep farmers develop fondness and familiarity with their herds, which in many cases have been bred by generations on the same farm. A number of place names in Iceland stem from sheep and sheep farming and the sheep are truly an integral part of the appearance and culture of the Icelandic countryside.

Lagður the rami s a fine representative of the current population of Icelandic sheep. Born in the Spring of 2007, he grew upo n the rangelands of Northern Iceland. Lagður is the offspring of decades of careful breeding work by the farmers of Brun and Hrisar Farm. He is white, horned and well-muscled. Lagður is a beautiful ram with a lon body and strong feet.

In the spring of 2010, Lagður joined the elite group of Icelandic rams when he was chosen as a breeing ram for the nationwide AI breeding services. As a result of this, sheep farming in Iceland will reap the benefits of his excellent genetic traits for years to come. “

    Icelandic Horse – HUGRÚN

The Icelandic horse beside hes small stature it is strong, hardy and famed for its five gaits. He is the evolution of the horses that Iceland’s first settlers brought with them and there has been no cross-breeding with other breeds. The Icelandic horse has long been affectionately known as “the most useful servant” and its importance to Icelandic work and travel before the advent of the automobile cannot be underestimated.

    “ Pastors’ conference
The Atlantic Puffin (Fratercula arctica) is the most common bird that nests in Iceland. I tis found on islands and grassy cliffs along the coast. The Puffin, which is a migratory bird, is commonly nicknamed the pastor in Iceland due to its distinguished appearance.

Puffin couples nest in burrows where both parents keep a home for their single chick, which is called kofa or pysja in Icelandic. The couple separates during winter but reunite in Spring, returning to their busy family life. I tis hard to say if the separation is the key to the Atlantic puffins’ successful relationship, but studies show that puffins mate for life.

I tis hard work feeding sandeels, caplin and various invertebrates to the hungry chick. At the end of the day the puffin therefore enjoys a well-deserved break with his neighbours, as seen here. The chick leaves the nest in August and flies toweards the sea. However, many lose their bearings. In the Westman Islands, South of the mainland, i tis customary for children to collect the confused chicks and guide them to the sea. “

ICELAND – Two continents meet in Iceland, lying as it does on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge between the North-American and Eurasian tectonic plates. Iceland is known as the lan of ice and fire, as both active volcanos and enormous glaciers can be found there. Icelandic nature contains many such contrasting features – lush valleys and expansive deserts, narrow fjords and vast plains, high waterfalls and big lakes.

    Krumkaka – Krumkake

The “Krumkaka” is a decorated festivity bread, fried in specially designed krumkaka-irons. The decorations on the irons can be of different patterns that are influenced by national traditions or religion. In the old days, the krumakaka-irons were expensive and not everybody could afford one. Those who didn’t could use the services of so-called “baking women” who travelled from one farm to another fried the krumkakas using their own irons. Despite newer cooking traditions in Norwegian homes, the krumkaka has endured and for many a necessity for the Christmas table.

    ” Highland Traveleers
Reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) are newcomers to Iceland. They were introduced in the 18th century as na attempt to expand Icelandic farming. However, Icelanders never mastered reindeer herding and kept to their traditional sheep farming.

Reindeer have a circumpolar distribution and have been domesticated for over 2.000 years. This hardy animal has evolved unique adaptations to survive in the cold Arctic, including a thick coat and large hooves.

The Icelandic reindeer population consists of around 4.000 animals that are confined to the East and Southeast of Iceland. The females calve in late May and during summer they form large herds roaming the highlands. In early autumn the males join the herds for the breeding season. In winter, the herds break u pinto smaller groups, which are often seen in the lowlands, seeking regure from the hardship of winter frosts.
Throughout the years the people of East Iceland have hunted reindeer for meat and skin, and used its horns for tool making and handicraft. Today the reindeer plays and importante role in the identify of East Iceland and the locals proudly welcome guests to meet these highland travellers. ”

    “ Riding the soft sands
For centuries, the Icelandic horse was the only means of transportation in Iceland as well as being a valuable working animal. It was therefore referred to as “the most useful servant”. Farmers still use the horse to gather sheep, but nowadays most horses are kept for leisure and competition. The Icelandic, as i tis commonly called, is a fascinating breed with exceptional qualities. I tis a sturdy, resiliente, good-tempered and adaptable breed, which displays five gaits and great variety in coat colour.

Na increasing number of people enjoy the unspoiled nature of Iceland from the back of a horse. Riding tours are an unforgettable experience and a unique way to explore the country. Each rider often travels with several horses, resulting in a lively herdo f loose horses accompanying the travellers.

One of Iceland’s most spectacular riding paths lies in þingeyrasandur in Northwest Iceland, where the pictured herd runs. The sandy reef separates a freshwater lagoon from the Atlantic Ocean. The path takes you from the historie place þingeyrar and across Bjargaós inlet to Vatnsnes peninsula. Along the way, riders come across various bird species and sometimes seals can be seen resting by the inlet, awaiting a bite of salmon or trout. ”

    ” Sound of Spring
After a harsh Icelandic winter, the arrival of migratory birds is a long-awaited sign of Spring. One bird in particular, the Golden Plover (Pluvialis Apricaria), is especially welcomed as the bearer of the new season. Each year, the first Golden Plovers are usually seen in April as they arrive in flocks and make their presence felt. For many Icelanders their singing is a sign that summer is around the corner.

The Golden Plover winters in Great Britain, along the West coast of the European mainland, Gilbraltar and North Africa. They are amon Iceland’s most iconic summer birds and nest all over the country. They stand tal and like to position themselves where they can enjoy a good view over their surroundings. In late summer the Golden Plovers form flocks again and prepare for their journey to warmer climates.

The Golden Plover is cherished by most Icelanders for its beautiful appearance and distinctive singing. It has a strong presence in Icelandic literature and folklore, and is sung about in favoured folk songs. ”
