Iceland From Above
Iceland From Above
Text and photographs by Björn Rúriksson 128 colour photographs
We are given a new and different view of Iceland in the pages of this book. As indicated by the title of the book Iceland is examined from above. Viewers who may know many or most of the localities are given the opportunity to see them from a new viewpoint and in a new light. All the images in the book are taken from the air and this is the first book to treat the landscapes of Iceland so extensively in this way.
The book is intended to show the variations of color in nature while also attempting to give an insight to the geological history of the country's formation as experienced by the author. Iceland is a brand new country geologically speaking and infantile when compared to the age of its neighboring countries. In spite of this Iceland is an ancient land whether its age is compared with man's lifespan or with its eleven hundred year history. If the age of the country after it appeared above sea level is likened to one day, then its entire history happens within six seconds. If its age is likened to a whole year, then it has only been half an hour since the settlement.

Iceland From Above – Land in Creation
This book displays the landscapes of Iceland in one of the most breathtaking and meaningful ways, from the air. As the book emerges, the Bárðarbunga eruption is underway with vigorous activity in the Holuhraun area, enabling stunning aerial pictures to be included to show us the living earth at work. The aerial perspective allows us to see clearly the extent and grandeur of volcanic features, as well as glaciers and rivers and the spectacular landscapes they have eroded. The reader thus experiences a deeper understanding of Iceland’s dynamic nature. Everything is intensified and relationships clarified. Catastrophic volcanic events and associated floods of recent years such as in the volcanoes of Vatnajökull and Eyjafjallajökull are depicted with breathataking photography.
The author, Björn Rúriksson, is well qualified for this work. Not only is he a writer, photographer and naturalist of distinction, but an experienced pilot who knows his country and its natural history intimately, both from the air and on the ground. In this, his latest book, he has produced a work which is both highly informative and beatiful.

In mid-August 2014, Iceland’s second highest mountain, Bárðarbunga, awoke from its slumber. A stratovolcano located under Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest ice cap, Bárðarbunga, is part of a vast volcanic system that covers much of the entre of the island. After a few dramatic days of intense seismic activity, an eruption started in the Holuhraun lava field north of Bárðarbunga. At 4 a.m. on August 31st, the magma found its way to the surface. By the time this book was sent to print, the Holuhraun lava eruption had already become one of the largest witnessed in Iceland since the 19th century and showing no sign of abating.
Ragnar Th. Sigurðsson is one of Iceland’s most experienced photographers. He has closely followed these events from both the air and ground from the very beginning.
Breathtaking photographs from the lava eruption in Holuhraun 2014.

There is a Party in the Sky …
Welcome to the playground of light. It can be magical place. The northern sky is a magnificent canvas for colors and luminescence, light and darkness. Science tells us that northern lights appear due to charged particles from the Sun, mainly electrons and protons interacting with Earth’s magnetic field and atmosphere, causing optical emissions. This natural phenomenon has fascinated us through the ages and its intensity and diversity will surely continue to amaze. Just look up, the sky might be dancing…
We have always been fascinated with the magical displays of the northern sky. Our ancestors saw the northern lights as souls of the dead, torches of spirits or even harbingers of war. This book presents a visual feast from Iceland’s firmament – a diverse and enchanting sky, shot from all over the country.
