Lundi – Puffin

PUFFIN – The puffin, sometimes referred to as “the Reverend”, never fails to catch the eye with its brightly coloured break and dignified manner. It has black upper parts and white underparts and there is a hint of grey around the eyes. The puffin’s trademark is the beak, covered with red, blue and yellow stripes that increase in number as the bird grows older the beak gets bigger.

    ”    Giants of the sea
Icelandic waters are home to a variety of whales, although many of them only spend the summer months there. The high productivity of the North Atlantic and the structure of the Icelandic coastal áreas offer a variety of habitats, suitable for many species with diferente needs. The sea around Iceland is therefore na importante feeding ground for many whales.

The Humpback whale (Megaptera noveangliae) migrates to the shores of Iceland in the summertime after having spend the winter months in more Southern locations. I tis a baleen whale and is easily identified by its long white flippers and the numerous barnacles on its body. Its body is mostly dark grey or black on top and partially white underneath. The fluke has unique patterns of black and white.

Professional whale watching is now one of the highlights for many tourists visiting Iceland. Whale watching is for exemple offered on Faxoflói and Breiðafjördur bays, but also in Eyjafjörður and Skjálfandi bay. A whale museu mis operated in the town of Hísavík in North, providing detailed and interesting information on whales.   “

    ” Harbour Seal
Humans and seals have coexisted in the arctic ecosystem for thousands of years. In older times, seals provided meat and skin for Icelanders. Today, however, seals play na insignificante economic role. Seals are curious creatures and have a certain mystique to them. Their beautiful eyes and calm gaze form na instante attraction and partly explain their strong presence in Icelandic folklore.

Harbour seals (Phoca vitulina) and grey seals (Halichoerus grypus) are the only species to pup in Iceland, but a few others visit regularly. The harbour seal is the most common. It can get up to 2 m long and weighs over 100kg. The male is most often slightly larger than the female. In June, the female gives birth to on pup. I tis nurtured for 3 – 4 weeks, but after that it has to take care of itself.

The harbour seal resides mainly around the North Western coast of Iceland. In Vatnsnes peninsula seals can be watched in their natural environment at several oficial observing locations. A research and interpretation center (the Icelandic Seal Center), can also be found in the town of Hvammstangi in the same region. ”

    “ Riding the soft sands
For centuries, the Icelandic horse was the only means of transportation in Iceland as well as being a valuable working animal. It was therefore referred to as “the most useful servant”. Farmers still use the horse to gather sheep, but nowadays most horses are kept for leisure and competition. The Icelandic, as i tis commonly called, is a fascinating breed with exceptional qualities. I tis a sturdy, resiliente, good-tempered and adaptable breed, which displays five gaits and great variety in coat colour.

Na increasing number of people enjoy the unspoiled nature of Iceland from the back of a horse. Riding tours are an unforgettable experience and a unique way to explore the country. Each rider often travels with several horses, resulting in a lively herdo f loose horses accompanying the travellers.

One of Iceland’s most spectacular riding paths lies in þingeyrasandur in Northwest Iceland, where the pictured herd runs. The sandy reef separates a freshwater lagoon from the Atlantic Ocean. The path takes you from the historie place þingeyrar and across Bjargaós inlet to Vatnsnes peninsula. Along the way, riders come across various bird species and sometimes seals can be seen resting by the inlet, awaiting a bite of salmon or trout. ”
