“ Friends So Fine
Iceland sits at a boundary between two continentes. This is reflected in the country’s birdlife. In iceland you can encounter bird species not found elsewhere in Europe. One of these species is Barrow’s Goldeneye (Bucephala Islandica), or the house-duck as i tis known in Iceland.
This species is mainly found in NW-Canada but it also nests in the Lake Mývatn and Laxá área of Northern Iceland, which is where the pictured couples resides. This área. Which hosts a high number of bird species, is the only breeding ground of the house-duck in Iceland and many consider it to be the signature bird of the área. At Lake Mývatn it mainly nests in holes and crevices in the surrounding lava fields but also in barns and outbuildings at farms.
It has become customary for farmers in the Mývatn área to prepare nesting spots in their farm buildings, since back in the day the house-duck’s eggs were precious food. Nowadays this close community between man and bird first and foremost provides a valuable opportunity to observe this rare and attractive bird at close encounters. “
