“ Master of disguise
The Rock Ptarmigan (Lagopus muta) is a common bird in Iceland, as in most other parts of the Arctic Region. It nests all over the country, from the shore to the highlands. In the summertime the Ptarmigan feeds primarily on leaves, seeds and berries, but during winter, when the ground is covered with snow, birch and willow buds are the most importante food.

The Ptarmigan uses camouflage to hide from predators. It sneaks around, attempting to blend into its surroundings, rather than relying on its fairly clumsy flying skills for an escape. It has seasonal plumagem; changing colours from Brown in summer to grey or speckled in autumn and white in winter. As a result it can be an easy prey for falcons in a winter thaw, and when the seasons change.

The Ptarmigan is cherished by most Icelanders. For some i tis a precious bird to be admired and protected, but to others i tis a game bird and a source of a festive meal. The Ptarmigan i salso na importante figure in folklore and poetry. Some people for exemple believe that if the Ptarmigan turns white early in the autumn a hard winter will follow.

    Krumkaka – Krumkake

The “Krumkaka” is a decorated festivity bread, fried in specially designed krumkaka-irons. The decorations on the irons can be of different patterns that are influenced by national traditions or religion. In the old days, the krumakaka-irons were expensive and not everybody could afford one. Those who didn’t could use the services of so-called “baking women” who travelled from one farm to another fried the krumkakas using their own irons. Despite newer cooking traditions in Norwegian homes, the krumkaka has endured and for many a necessity for the Christmas table.

    ”    Giants of the sea
Icelandic waters are home to a variety of whales, although many of them only spend the summer months there. The high productivity of the North Atlantic and the structure of the Icelandic coastal áreas offer a variety of habitats, suitable for many species with diferente needs. The sea around Iceland is therefore na importante feeding ground for many whales.

The Humpback whale (Megaptera noveangliae) migrates to the shores of Iceland in the summertime after having spend the winter months in more Southern locations. I tis a baleen whale and is easily identified by its long white flippers and the numerous barnacles on its body. Its body is mostly dark grey or black on top and partially white underneath. The fluke has unique patterns of black and white.

Professional whale watching is now one of the highlights for many tourists visiting Iceland. Whale watching is for exemple offered on Faxoflói and Breiðafjördur bays, but also in Eyjafjörður and Skjálfandi bay. A whale museu mis operated in the town of Hísavík in North, providing detailed and interesting information on whales.   “

    “ Pastors’ conference
The Atlantic Puffin (Fratercula arctica) is the most common bird that nests in Iceland. I tis found on islands and grassy cliffs along the coast. The Puffin, which is a migratory bird, is commonly nicknamed the pastor in Iceland due to its distinguished appearance.

Puffin couples nest in burrows where both parents keep a home for their single chick, which is called kofa or pysja in Icelandic. The couple separates during winter but reunite in Spring, returning to their busy family life. I tis hard to say if the separation is the key to the Atlantic puffins’ successful relationship, but studies show that puffins mate for life.

I tis hard work feeding sandeels, caplin and various invertebrates to the hungry chick. At the end of the day the puffin therefore enjoys a well-deserved break with his neighbours, as seen here. The chick leaves the nest in August and flies toweards the sea. However, many lose their bearings. In the Westman Islands, South of the mainland, i tis customary for children to collect the confused chicks and guide them to the sea. “
